Sree Narayana Mission, Coimbatore was founded in the year 1959 by the devout followers of Sree Narayana Guru, who wanted an organisation to propagate the messages and teachings of their mentor among the people in and around Coimbatore and also to serve them socially to alleviate their difficulties through spiritual and economic means for living a better and righteous life. The organisation was registered as a Society in 1960 under the Tamilnadu Societies Registration Act under No. 80/1960.
The efforts of the members of the Mission to have a land of their own and to have a centre built up to perform their duties therefrom became fruitful when a plot was purchased in Saibaba Colony in the northern part of the city and a Prayer Hall was constructed in 1969. It is from here that the activities of the Mission are being formulated and implemented ever since
The Prayer Hall has since been used to hold meetings, seminars and conventions on subjects of spiritual and social importance with eminent speakers converging at frequent intervals to guide the devotees along the path Gurudeva enunciated for them. Sree Narayana Mission, besides celebrating the yearly Sree Narayana Guru Jayanthi in grand manner, makes it a routine to celebrate the ‘Chathayam’ in every month as a ceremonious occasion with special pooja, Bhajana and spiritual discourses.
Sree Narayana Mission entered the educational scene with the formation of Sree Narayana Guru Educational Trust and started Sree Narayana Guru Polytechnic College in Madukkarai in 1984. The success of this educational institution as a role model for others in the State of Tamilnadu, gave the management a spring board to establish Sree Narayana Guru College of Arts and Science in K.G.Chavadi and Sree Narayana Guru Institute of Management Studies in later years. Apart from these, Sree Narayana Mission has two Matriculation Schools under its direct management, which too have produced good academic results.
The social activities of Sree Narayana Mission have covered wider fields such as Medical Relief with the functioning of a free Medical Centre catering to the needs of the lower rung of the society and also a reading room and library with a vast collection of books on various matters of religious, spiritual, literary and social contents. Newspapers and periodicals are subscribed regularly which the local people make use of in the evenings to enhance their knowledge about current affairs.
Sree Narayana Mission has its auxiliary wings such as a Youth Movement, a Ladies Wing and under the aegis of the Youth Movement many Youth Clubs in many Schools in Coimbatore. These units work as an energetic force at the grass root level to infuse an awareness about Sree Narayana Gurudeva and his messages in young minds and inspire them to learn and work along the path Gurudeva has shown for humanity.
The year long Golden Jubilee Celebration was inaugurated in the Jayanthi Sammelanam last year on 14-09-2008 by Padmasree P.R. Krishnakumar, Managing Director of Arya Vaidya Pharmacy (CBE) Ltd. The programmes chalked out for 2008-2009 included community mass marriages giving stress to inter-caste marriages which was one of the ways that Gurudeva propounded for fostering religious harmony and eradication of caste system. The programme envisaged frequent lecture meetings where eminent people were invited to speak on matters of spiritual and social awareness.
Involvement of students in the celebrations was found to be a necessary factor so that the younger generation could imbibe more knowledge about Gurudeva and his messages. Competitions of various kinds such as essay writing, elocution, drawing and painting, music and dance were also programmed for students at district level. A book fair and cultural programmes by well known artists on the evening of 21st and 22nd of November are also on the cards.
On the Sports and Games side, a chess tournament for students, shuttle tournament open to all and also a mini marathon are also being arranged under the supervision of experienced sports personnel in the city. A variety of items in the scheme of the whole celebrations have been conducted. The Golden Jubilee celebration Committee is seized of the urgency in completing the programmes in full before the final day on 23rd November when prizes to the winners will be awarded by the V.I.Ps present in the concluding session.
The Golden Jubilee now being celebrated is a milestone in the progress Sree Narayana Mission has achieved in its dedicated service to mankind under the guiding principles of Gurudeva’s messages and his life itself. The members of the Mission and the general mass of devotees consider it most proper to have this occasion commemorated with the construction of a Gurumandiram and installation of a statue combined with a Golden Jubilee concluding session befitting the occasion.
Most importantly a Souvenir to commemorate the event is also being prepared for release on the occasion.
